This year marks the 20th anniversary of Breakin’ It Down. The conference will take place on Friday, October 27, 2023. We, the Planning Committee, would like to celebrate this milestone year by reflecting on our accomplishments in advancing racial equity in the field of nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising as individuals, as an organization, and as a community; by assessing the consequences of recent high court rulings; and looking at what lies ahead. We hope to put together something different, something disruptive, perhaps. The theme will be “Celebrating 20 Years of Breakin’ It Down: Looking Back to Look Forward.”

Breakin’ It Down is 20! To commemorate this milestone, Breakin’ It Down is celebrating its community in a series of digital stories titled "Celebrating 20 Years of Breakin’ It Down: Looking Back to Look Forward." We would like your perspective on BID’s shining moments and how it has contributed to advancing racial equity in the field of nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising over the years; also, how it has benefited you both personally and professionally.
The BID conference has been at the forefront for mobilizing, empowering discourse, and information-sharing with a racial equity lens. It is our hope that the conference will ignite human potential and galvanize philanthropic and community leaders, educators, policymakers, and professionals to keep taking the steps to advance racial equity in the field and to expand opportunities to diverse communities and professionals in the field. In particular, we hope to embolden BIPOC community members and students to pursue careers and leadership in the field of nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising.
Through March 31, 2024, Chicago’s nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising community is invited to submit a story. Each selected story, along with a portrait of the storyteller, will be featured on BID’s website and Facebook and Linkedin pages.
If you would like to participate, please take a few minutes to answer the following questions. We also ask that you submit a current headshot to accompany your responses, written or interview. If you have a photo that you would also like to share—please send along! Thank you for participating in this important event in BID’s history.
Please join us in thanking our sponsors, whose belief and support
have made the event possible.
